Look Chin Pad Priau Wan - Meatballs in Sweet and Sour Sauce

Sweet and sour sauces are special – you either love them or you hate them. And if you hate them, maybe I can convince you otherwise with this recipe. But no matter which side you're on, I want to introduce you to my recipe for Thai meatballs in sweet and sour sauce, or "Look Chin Pad Priau Wan" (ลูกชิ้นผัดเปรี้ยวหวาน). You have free choice when it comes to vegetables, but the combination of bell pepper, cucumber, and pineapple is absolutely recommended.

Ingredients for 2 servings Look Chin Pad Priau Wan

Preparation is easy and can be done even by beginners in Thai cuisine. As with all wok dishes, thorough preparation of all ingredients is essential.

Just follow my cooking instructions.

Look Chin (Thai meatballs) 12 pieces
Garlic 1 clove
Cucumber 1/4 piece
Fresh pineapple, diced 50 g
Red bell pepper 50 g
Unsalted cashews 50 g
Spring onion 1 piece
Vegetable oil 2 tbsp
Jasmine rice for serving

Sweet and Sour Sauce

Palm sugar or brown sugar 2 tbsp
White vinegar 2 tbsp
Oyster sauce 2 tbsp
Sriracha sauce 2 tbsp
Light soy sauce 1 tbsp
Toasted sesame oil 1 tsp

Preparation

  1. Prepare the sweet and sour sauce: Mix all ingredients in a small bowl and stir well until the palm sugar has completely dissolved. Set aside.
  2. Peel the garlic and cut it into fine pieces. Quarter the cucumber (lengthwise) and cut it into elongated pieces. Cut the bell pepper into strips. Dice the fresh pineapple. Cut the spring onion into thin rings.
  3. Heat a wok or high-sided pan and add the vegetable oil.
  4. Add the meatballs and sear them on all sides until they start to brown. Remove from the wok and set aside.
  5. In the still hot wok, sauté the garlic and the white part of the spring onion until the garlic starts to fragrant.
  6. Add the cucumber and pineapple and sauté, stirring constantly.
  7. Add the bell pepper strips along with the Look Chin and sauté everything together for another minute.
  8. Add the sweet and sour sauce and mix with all ingredients.
  9. Fold in the cashews and the green part of the spring onion, turn off the heat and mix everything thoroughly once more.
  10. Arrange the finished Look Chin Pad Priau Wan on plates along with jasmine rice and a few cucumber slices and serve steaming hot.
